The short answer
QuickBooks Desktop was not discontinued. What happened is narrower, and the difference decides whether buying a 2024 license makes sense for you.
On 30 September 2024, Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions of four products to new customers in the United States:
- QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll
That is the whole of it. The software was not switched off, existing customers were not cut loose, and one product was never part of the change at all.
Three things that did not happen
QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise was not affected. Intuit stated plainly that Enterprise products are outside this change and that customers can continue to buy Enterprise subscriptions after 30 September 2024.
Existing subscribers were not cut off. Anyone already on a Desktop Plus or Desktop Payroll subscription can keep renewing it, and Intuit continues to issue security updates, product updates and support for them.
Nothing stopped working. Every copy of QuickBooks Desktop already installed kept opening, kept its company file, and kept doing the work. A sales decision is not a kill switch.
The change also applies to the United States only.
Why people read "discontinued"
Because the direction of travel is real, even if the headline was wrong. Intuit has spent a decade moving customers from a one-time purchase to an annual subscription, and then from the desktop to the browser. The 2024 stop-sell was one more step, and it is the step where a lot of small businesses decided they had had enough.
If you searched for this article because your renewal quote went up again, or because you were told Desktop is "going away" and you should move to QuickBooks Online, that is the pressure working as intended. It does not mean the desktop software stopped being good at what it does.
What a one-time 2024 license actually gives you
A perpetual license is the older model, and it is simple: you pay once, you install the software, it runs on your computer, and there is no renewal date to miss.
- No monthly or annual fee
- Your company file stays on your machine, not on a server you rent
- The software keeps running whether or not you ever pay Intuit again
- Works offline — you need a connection once, to activate

The date that matters: 31 May 2027
Here is the part most sellers leave out, and the reason to read this section twice.
Intuit runs a roughly three-year service life for each Desktop release. For the 2024 release, that ends on 31 May 2027. After that date, the add-on services attached to QuickBooks Desktop 2024 stop:
- QuickBooks Desktop Payroll
- Online bank feeds
- QuickBooks Payments
- Live technical support from Intuit
- Security and product updates for that version
What does not stop is the software. QuickBooks Desktop 2024 still opens after 31 May 2027. Your company file still opens. You still write invoices, run reports, track inventory, reconcile accounts and close your books. What you lose is the connected layer that talks to Intuit's servers.
Count the months before you buy. As of today that is roughly eight months of connected services, and then an indefinite run of the software on its own. For a lot of businesses — the ones who keep their books locally, do payroll elsewhere or not at all, and import bank activity by hand or by file — that trade is exactly the one they want. For others it is not, and we would rather you knew now.
Who a 2024 license suits
It suits you if:
- You want to own your accounting software outright instead of renting it
- Your books should live on your own computer
- You do not depend on Intuit Desktop Payroll or bank feeds
- You were pushed toward a subscription or toward QuickBooks Online and would rather not go
- You need a specific Desktop feature that QuickBooks Online does not have
It does not suit you if:
- You need Intuit Desktop Payroll to keep running past May 2027
- Automatic bank feeds are load-bearing in your workflow
- You want Intuit's own live support available for years to come
- You need several people working in the file from different locations over the internet

What to check before you buy
- Windows or Mac. The Windows editions and Mac Plus are separate products. This is the most common ordering mistake.
- How many people are in the file at once. Seats are the main thing you pay for — see how many users you actually need.
- Which edition. Pro Plus, Enterprise, Enterprise Accountant and Mac Plus differ by more than price — the edition comparison lays it out.
- Your computer. Check the 2024 system requirements before you pay, not after.
- Whether you need the connected services past May 2027. If yes, a 2024 license is the wrong purchase, whoever you buy it from.
